Best Internet Options for Rural Addresses
Rural connectivity has changed more in the last five years than in the previous twenty, and most advice online is out of date. Satellite is no longer a punishment, 5G home internet is a serious option where towers have headroom, and the fastest connection in a lot of farm country now comes from the electric co-op.
Check what neighbours measure before you shop
Rural addresses are where marketing maps go furthest wrong, because a single served location can make a whole area look connected. Start by putting the address into SignalScout and reading the measured tile: median download, upload, latency, and crucially the number of tests. Rural tiles are sparse. A tile with 9 tests is a hint; a tile with 300 is evidence. Widen out to the surrounding tiles to see the pattern.

How to read your numbers against the country
The Connectivity Score ranks an address against national measured percentiles. For fixed broadband, the 5th percentile is 27 Mbps, the 10th is 57, the 25th is 148, and the median is 313 Mbps. Plenty of rural addresses land in the bottom decile, and the honest framing is that anything above roughly 50 Mbps down with 10 Mbps up and latency under 70 ms will run a normal household, including video calls, if you manage it sensibly.
Latency beats headline speed in rural life. A 40 Mbps connection at 30 ms feels responsive. A 150 Mbps connection at 650 ms feels broken, because every click waits for a round trip to geostationary orbit and back. If you take video calls, treat latency as the first filter and speed as the second.
The co-op question, asked first
If there is one phone call to make, it is to your rural electric cooperative or local telephone cooperative. Many have built or are building fiber to every meter in their service territory, funded partly by federal programmes. They rarely advertise nationally, they often do not appear on comparison sites, and their service is frequently the best in the county. Ask three things: do you offer broadband, is my meter in a completed phase, and if not, which phase am I in and what is the target year?

Making 5G home internet work
Where it is available, this is often the best value rural option. A few things determine whether it works at your specific address:
- Distance and terrain to the tower. A ridge between you and the tower matters more than raw distance.
- Band. Low-band travels far and delivers modest speeds; mid-band delivers the good numbers but reaches less far.

Is Starlink better than fixed wireless for a rural address?
It depends on line of sight in both cases. LEO satellite needs an unobstructed view of the sky and performs consistently at 25 to 70 ms latency almost anywhere, while a good local WISP link can be cheaper and lower latency but requires line of sight to a tower. Can I use SignalScout to predict 5G home internet speeds?

Why does my rural tile show no data?
Ookla tiles only exist where speed tests were run, so very low-density areas can have empty tiles. Check the surrounding tiles, and treat any tile with only a handful of tests as weak evidence rather than a reliable median.
Is DSL still worth taking in 2026?
Only if nothing else is available or as a cheap backup line. DSL speeds fall with distance from the cabinet, most carriers have stopped investing in it, and in many areas it is being retired, so it is rarely a good primary connection where 5G home internet, fixed wireless or LEO satellite can reach you.
